Personal background
I live in Eastern Canada and have always been an avid science "nut".
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
In my opinion it is not a question of extraterrestrial life existing, it is a question of is it closer enought to be able to carry on a "conversation" with, or too far away and too faint to hear. Given the times laspes involved in a signal being found in a star 5,000,000 light years away the possibility exists they they are now extinct. But we have to try. Earth radiates enough radio and television signals strenght that someone might hear us, hopefully we will be able to hear them.

We will only discover extraterrestrial life if we look for it and I would hope in my lifetime. (I am 43 now)

The benefit is one of answering the one question of "Are we alone?". Anything else is pure luxury. The danger is to not have an answer to that question.

A transmitting beacon..... a good idea but what kind of beacon?

I run Seti at home because I think it is the right thing to do, this project gets support from so very few.

I view the project as a necessary one that gets overlooked by the majority of the population.
