Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that it is quite possible that extraterrestial life exists. Now if it is intelligent, that is another thing. I cannot imagine when the human race will discover it, but I keep hoping it will be any day. More likely, it will take at least over five or so decades. The benefits for such a discovery are many, however the first one that comes to mind is that it will provide an answer to an age old question: are we alone in the Universe? Also, it will provide some excetiment and refresh/renew the interest of many folks in outer space and the possibility of making contact with a completely undiscovered species. There will definitely be people whose faith will be challanged, and as such, may create disharmony initially.
I am not sure that I am qualified to say whether humans should become a beacon for others to find. But in a selfish manner, I would like to believe that I personally would. As for sharing information, the basics still work; music, math, radio and tv broadcasts, and so on...
I think any effort in broadening our scope is something I want to be a part of. I like the basic idea behind this project, but a little more encouragement to the general public may introduce this technology to many many more worldwide. In other words, better user recognition, special announcements etc. could go a longer way!
