Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I watched the Carl Sagan episode on Cosmos where he present the actual formula for calculating how many advanced civiliazations might be out there. It was really interesting. One has got to believe that other people exist out there given the vastness of the Universe. Since life appears to spontaneously arrise when conditions are right, there must be other advanced civiliazations out there. I kind of like the one done in a Star Trek Episode where Captain Picard was in communication with a probe launched from a dying planet. It would be cool if we could leave some kind of a lasting record of the Human Races existance. In the Star Trek Episode, a short snap shot of a typical person's life was cronicled over time. I originally contributed to SETI when it was first formed many years ago before the creation of the SETI@home client. I also subscribed to the Planetary Society at that time as well. It was only recently however that an ally in a PBEM game (vgaplanets) had started running the SETI@home client. I decided to join him. Helping out with the SETI project seems like a worth while project. I like that thought of finding another out there even if the distances make real communication not possible.
