Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I hope so, it would be great to learn their language(s) and teach them ours and talk to them about society, ours and theirs, why we are the way we are and why they are the way they are. Benefits are mostly something new to learn about, a new perspective, and of course maybe we have something that is badly needed by them or they have something badly needed by us. It's funny that we always think that anyone "out there" is going to be far more technically advanced than we. Perhaps they're just inventing the telephone, or maybe they don't care about technology. Personally, I'd like to know about their version of martial arts and their literature and music and games, and how they play them. Dangers, that makes me a little nervouse. Of course they could be violent, and the typical "martians invade earth" stereotype, but also we don't have a great track record when it comes to not trying to destroy and pain ourselves, so I would hate to see us corrupt some freaking aliens. DISEASES, holy, if we can't go to another country and drink the water, imagine another planet! Their antibodies, ours, would they be compatible, do they have them? There's just so much stuff that can go wrong, which is why radio signals and the likes are a good starting place. I think we should transmit a beacon, but how do we sum up humanity, earth? And do we really want them to know about us first?? "Know yourself, Know your enemy" Just in case, I wouldn't want to be completely in the dark about them, nor they us, I imagine. I run SETI@home because I think this endeavor is made easier and more possible by having as many people assisting as possible. The people who have to process this data would have a hard time doing it themselves, and it would take so much longer. Suggestions: I would like to be able to run the program more than one at a time. I mean be able to study one signal with one window, and a second with another. Most computers should be able to handle this and they're getting stronger all the time, plus alot of people l
