Personal background
Hi, I'm Johnny. I live in Houston/Clearlake, the NASA area. When I go out for a pint, the bar is filled with NASA folks. Yes astronauts, scientists, engineers, and all manner of military and support personnel drink beer w/me. (Big Bald Johnny Leche)

Some favorite NASA hangouts are The Outpost Tavern and Molly's and Sherlocks Pub. If you're ever in town try and find me there (especially when the Velcro Pygmmies are the bad) or at EPO (electronic parts outlet) where I get my rig components.

I have a son, born 1993 and he has a space cat called Chirp.

When I was young(er) and to this day, I've had a massive interest in the future and Carl Sagan's book "Contact" was really inspiring to me. They are watching. I think as a civilization "they" look at us as a 4 y/o with a loaded AK47. They are afraid, and some of them do morally follow the PrimeDirective.

If I'm lucky, that will happen in my lifetime.

Respect,

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, "they are out there".
2. Yes, while we don't really know what we are doing, it is in our nature to reach for the stars...
3. SETI has noble intentions that show enterprise, inovation, and a positive outlook for the future. I support all of the above.

As far as SETI goes, I think we are seeking patterns on the wrong medium (RF/ EM bands). "They" have found much more efficient modes of communication in dimensions beyond our ability for comprehenison at present. This Quantum/String/Quark Weak Force Beta Decay flux communication in dimension X happens instantly over great physical distance.

What do you suppose the price of admission is to the Univeral Phone Company, Library, and Neighborhood calling plan? I personally think we have to figure out how to detect the chirp and start a dialog on our snazzy new Quantum/String transcevier, exchanging knowledge tokens at the speed of thought. Where do you start when you don't even know what you are looking for? START HERE! We are on a very small island, far, far, away; in a vast ocean of ether. We are waiting for a message in a bottle. Scanning the shoreline 3 times for the bottle w/message in language we understand; to wash in when we want it seems quaint. We would have to be as lucky as someone that guessed the next 20 superbowl winners in 1900, won the powerball lottery 5 times in a row, and discovered cold fusion while fixing the toilet. Happy hunting. Keep your fingers crossed and keep reaching for the stars.
