Profile: Brian Peacock

Personal background
I'm from West Sussex in southern UK, my age is 57 and I work for a small local newspaper as a type-setter ad-makeup artist. My hobbies are internet, internet and then a little internet to follow, I like to play DeltaForce on-line. I'm separated (about 11 years) and thoroughly enjoying a single life. I served in the Royal Air Force for about 8 years from 1960 as a telegraphist. I am a Spiritualist - there is no doubt, they are there! - Currently I'm using a P4 1.7 mghz, 256 RAM and processing between 5 & 6 units per day working 24/7, previous PCs were much slower (between 24 & 32 hours per unit) so the average is still about 12 hours. I'm not a member of any group and I don't see any advantage in joining one, so please don't ask - I prefer to work alone.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It would be very arrogant of us to think that we were the only 'intelligent' life-form in the universe. We have no proof I know, but I belive that wherever conditions are right LIFE is the inevitable outcome. Life is the normal, not the exception. It would also be very arrogant of us to think that we are the most 'intelligent' life form in the universe, therefore if we listen and look in the right way and in the right place at the right time we should eventually find signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. Whether that intelligence is friendly or not remains to be seen, but whichever it is we should be prepared.

I don't know if SETI is looking in the right way/place/time yet, but it is a good first step and the SETI@HOME project is an excellent demonstration of what is possible when people of like mind work together - long may it continue.

Should we sent out a signal? I think we should, even if ET doesn't hear it, it may be useful to ourselves in future years when we are truly out there, as a direction finder and an aid to finding our way home.
