| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I think the possibility of extraterrestrial life is quite substantial, if I were to ask you, 'How many stars in the universe?' you might say about 10E 20 stars (current estimates) that's a 1 followed by 20 zeros! a hell of an amount of stars. At least some of them will be populated by some sort of 'intelligent' life, although proof for intelligent life on earth is sparse to say the least......:P
Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send? Well hold on there, haven't we already sent out such a beacon? The BBC started the world's first public television service in 1936, broadcasting from Alexandra Palace. So, in 65 years we have been sending out this beacon travelling at the speed of light (c=299,792,458 m/s), just think how many stars our beacon has reached.
I run SETI@home because I am a firm believer that there is life out there, even if that life only exists as microbes on some meteor from a distant planet. It would finally answer the all-time question, are we all alone? |
