| Personal background |
I'm a semi-retired 62 year old originally from Philadelphia PA, USA. I currently have BOINC/SAH running on 8 hosts and have been with SETI@Home for over 10 years. I first heard about the project on a local news broadcast shortly after they went on-line to the general public and about 15 minutes later was processing my first work unit.
BTW, no that's not me in the photo. He's Ben, my grand nephew.
- I have been an honest-to-goodness space cadet since reading my first Isaac Asimov novels at about the age of 12. (The Foundation Trilogy, of course!)
- Carl Sagan's COSMOS series on PBS left me breathless. I've since purchased it on DVD and still watch it from time to time.
- I have avidly followed most of what NASA has done from project Mercury through the current ISS construction.
When asked by friends who want to know why this project keeps my interest, my stock answer is "This is perhaps the closest I'll ever come to being able to do Real Science, even if as a somewhat passive participant." |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Does ET exist?
The numbers are way beyond my ability to visualize, too many zeros. The thought that we might be unique in the universe, or even in our own galaxy, is very difficult for me to believe.
Will we find him/her/it?
YES, eventually. I feel that we MUST continue to look even though this will likely take a long long time. As a certain alleged perpetrator said in the movie Dirty Harry: "Hey man, I gots to know." |
