Personal background
I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina... but have lived in 14 different states for various amounts of time. I was a Navy rat. Now I'm living in East Tennessee working for a Gas Turbine Engine Repair facility in the MIS department. I work with computers all day long, then get to come home and play on them all evening/night.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'll responde to all three examples at the top...
1) Yes, I believe et life does exist... it almost has to. With as many stars in our Galaxy alone, and God only knows how many planets capable of keeping life... mind blowing... absolutely, yes, I do believe we will discover ETs.

2) We are already transmitting a beacon... Radio waves. Until we find a way to transmit a signal FTL, radio waves will simply have to do.

3) I like to think that maybe my computer will be responsible for something being discovered in outer space. What an awesome thought.
