Profile: Jim Callaghan

Personal background
Hi, I am a long time member of the Planetary Society, and Dr. Carl Sagan was my idol, as far as astronomy is concerned. I watched him on the Late Show many times with Johnny Carson, I have read many of his (Less Technical) books, and I also watched the Series Cosmos, which really hooked me into his vision. I have copies of several episodes, and I enjoy watching them often.

I am presently self-employed to teach the seniors of this area, to learn and enjoy the use of the computer for many things: Email for family contact; Surfing the Net for enjoyment and knowledge; how to use the basics in their computer enjoyment; and I have so much fun doing this that I feel sorry for those who have a high-paying job that they dislike, but are afraid to branch out on their own.

I am in my late 50's, and I have found the job I like best, and I continually take upgrading courses at Sir Sandford Fleming College, located in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada. I simply feel that I have to stay ahead of the technology in order to pass my knowledge on to others.

I have had the best in teachers in Dr. Carl Sagan, and I try my best to educate others that are willing to learn. It is a wonderful, fun-filled process, and I enjoy every minute of it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) I am convinced that there is life out there. It is impossible to think otherwise, looking at the abundance of galaxies and star systems out there. I regularly leave my home in the valley, go up to the farmer's field behind our house, along with my 10X50 Binoculars, and I will stay for hours just looking at the night sky. I spend more time in the winter, when Orion is high in the sky, and just take in the majesty of it all. There is no danger of finding others out there, since the distance between us is so huge, and I think we would have to re-write the laws of physics in order to travel the great distances to contact them in person. I am not convinced that is possible. (I wish otherwise).

2) Yes. Mathematical equations are impersonal, and I think images would be my choice, along with some language that they might understand. Which, of course, brings us back to mathematical equations.

3) I am a competitive person, and I was slow off the mark when I realized that teams were being created, but to my dismay, I have had no others in my area that wanted to join such a team. This is a small town, and they always refer to what I do as looking for "Little Green Men". However, I have had as many as 5 of my own computers running this program, and it would be a great day in my life if the "WoW" signal was discovered on my system. If that were to happen, I would dedicate the results to Dr. Carl Sagan, as he was my inspiration. I am high in the standings, having used more than 33,000 CPU hours of my own computer time, at a little extra cost in Hydro to do this, but I am always watching my stats as compared to others.

I enjoy what I do. I hope everyone else can say the same thing.

(A spellcheck would be helpful here, I hate typos !!)
