Profile: Fernando Soares Schlindwein

Personal background
I was born in Porto Alegre, in the south of Brazil, a great city to live in, in 1956. Some clear nights when I was a kid I used to look up at the sky with my dad.

In 1980, after my graduation in Electronic Engineering, I moved to Rio de Janeiro, to study Biomedical Engineering at COPPE/UFRJ. The MSc in Rio was followed by a PhD in England and today I am a Biomedical Engineer interested in digital processing of biological signals. I am a lecturer in the Engineering Department of the University of Leicester, UK, since 1992. I am one of those rare cases of people who love what they do for a living.

As for hobbies, I like to play football (it is in the Brazilian genes!) and I also enjoy wine tasting (it is in the surname - 'Schlindwein' is 'wine taster' in old German, I was told - and maybe in the genes as well...)

I have a great wife, Walkiria, and a terrific son, Alexandre, who both make my life a very happy one.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe there are other life forms somewhere: I don't see why the Earth should be so special... To think that we are the only ones is nearly equivalent to the old belief that the Earth was the centre of the Universe!

I believe that if they discover us before we discover them then they are probably more advanced technologically than we are. And phylosophically I reason that if they are more advanced technologically then they will also be more advanced overall - and since they have not blown themselves up (!), I do not see the contact as dangerous (I am an optimist who believes in the good nature of Man and Life in general).

I am for the idea of sending a beacon to selected galaxies. As for what information, I leave that to the specialists.

I think the idea of using the spare time of our PCs to do some Science is an excellent one and I run SETI both at work and at home. Maybe I will find ET, who knows...
