Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think given the fact that the universe is virtually infinite, statistically there HAS to be SOME kind of life somewhere else, intelligent or not (though, again, statistically there would have to be intelligence elsewhere as well). I think it's egotistical to think we're unique.
Just the same, however, while I admire SETI's and the Planetary Society's work, who's to say we're even looking in the right places for signs of life? Just because we breath oxygen doesn't mean other lifeforms do as well. Same for carbon. I'm just saying, there's more than one way to catch a fish; search for other signs, ANY signs, increases the odds of finding something.
