Profile: Mark E. Kelly

Personal background
I am a Science teacher in Cape Coral, Florida. I teach high school Honors Earth and Space Science to 9th graders, and Astronomy to Juniors and Seniors.
Seti discussions are standard material in my classes, and the strong opinions of my students afford many opportunities for extremely animated debates.
I started running the Seti@home program 3 years ago, but ran into problems with the firewall. Now I have started again and have no more difficulties. I am running it here at school and at home. It is very interesting to see how much faster computers are now than they were only three years ago!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that there must be intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, and we may even discover it through the Seti program.
Benefits and dangers are probably irrelavent, given the probable distance to the nearest possible life (per Drake's equation).
Transmitting a beacon would be a good idea. I will leave the question of content to others, but it is probably not important since true communication is improbable at best.
I run Seti@home because I think it is our best chance (even if it is a small one) of finding out if we have company in the universe. If we never search we guarantee that we will never find out the answer.
