Personal background
From: Earth

Physics & space junkie extraordinaire. And waiting for the little green men (or little gray men, for that matter) to come take me away.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Does ET life exist? Almost certainly, in my opinion, but not necessarily as we imagine it (little green/gray men, etc...) Life exists on earth in many forms and i would expect that the rest of the universe is equally diverse.
The discovery of ET existance is more problematic. ET algae do not give off radio signals or laser pulses. nor do feline equivalents from Alpha Centauri (hypothetically speaking). it's a big universe out there and unless intelligent life is buzzing our planet, it may be a while, and we may make first contact. who really knows... but i'd like to be on the receiving end of a radio or laser signal.
the benefits to our species would be unimaginable. cultural. scientific. artistic. perhaps spiritual. we all look for different things. personally, i'd like to try their local version of the chateau briand.

2. i am of the opinion that we should transmit a beacon, but we are doing that already with Gilligan's Island and Who Want's To Be A Millionaire? We should do more, both radio, and when the technology exists, high energy laser pulses. We should send the same basic information that was sent on the voyager spacecraft: our position in the universe, a basic schematic of our bodies, perhaps some mathematical information, etc...

3. why do i run seti@home?... why not? can't hurt. i support the program and would, more than anything, like to have confirmation that there are others out there, and see if they want to enslave us or feed us to their children. oh... or initiate a dialogue and share information and resources.........
