Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extra-terrestrial life exists. I have read a bit about the "Rare Earth" hypothesis too. It argues that the creation of complex organisms (like us) must be a random event dependent on many factors (position of the host planet, presence of giant planets like Jupiter etc.). But the Universe is immense. I find it a bit hard to believe that the same level of evolution cannot happen in other places.

Sometimes I get a strange thought. What if we are the firstborn (in the galaxy or maybe in the universe)? What if the other ET beings haven't reached our level of technical advancement? Possible, isn't it? I don't know what the scientists will say about our being the firstborns. But if we want to find out, we need to try reaching the other ET civilizations. SETI scientists Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison put it more eloquently : "The probability of success is difficult to estimate, but if we never search, the chance of success is zero."

Thank you.
