Personal background
I am from Salt Lake City. I am 28 years old. I work at the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City, Utah.
I have been interested in astronomy since I was 5 years old.
I want to be the first to shake hands/feelers/antennae/whatever with an extraterrestial intelligent lifeform.
They are out there somewhere. All we need to do is keep looking.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe ET exists. I don't believe they have visited or contacted Earth yet. But I am positive they will someday. I think the way it will be discovered is publicized in the brilliant film and book "Contact" by Carl Sagan. I figure that will be how it will happen and what will happen on Earth to us lifeforms living here. What happens next would be up to us.
Benefits would be the knowledge that we are not alone. They might share technology and ideas with us. the dangers are if they are hostile or the military finds them first and makes them angry because they think aliens will invade Earth.
Humans should set up a beacon to make us "available" for contact and so we are easier to find. After all, the universe is very large. finding us is like a needle in a very large haystack.
I run Seti@home because it is a very good idea. Lots of computers in the world doing nothing. We might as well put them to use looking for ET.
Discovery of ET would be the greatest event in human history, as well as a magnificent scientific triumph. Then we can see whether Hollywood is accurate or not!
