Profile: Andreas Steinwachs

Personal background
I'm a Computer Scientist with a four year diploma degree. A German "Diplom-Informatiker (FH)" degree is about equal to a Master of Science (MSc) degree.

So what am I doing? Well, professionally, I'm a freelance (Enterprise) Software Architect and Senior Software Developer with a focus on Java Enterprise Edition. Feel free to contact me with project inquiries as a Technical Lead, Lead Developer or Technical Architect for your projects.

Of course, I like anything to do with computers and Computer Science, but I'm on the software side rather than on the hardware side. I really like programming and creating web applications. But besides that, I do have many more hobbies and interests: First of all, I like being social. So I have the greatest times meeting my friends. And I love traveling[/i, [i]Sports (Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Basketball), Music/Guitar, Film, Short Films, Drawing, Cartooning and many more.

I'm not a TV person though because I think it's a waste of time. There's some good things on anyway: Some of my favorite movies are "Analyse This" feat. Chrystal/DeNiro and "Arlington Road" feat. Bridges/Robbins".Titan A.E." is a nice one. One of my all time faves is The Big Lebowski. I used to watch The X-Files (what a disappointing end), and I still like The Simpsons, Futurama, and South Park. Scrubs certainly is the most hilarious TV series.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I heard about S.E.T.I.@home many years ago, but I didn't follow it up for some time. In 2001 however, I finally decided to put my interest in SETI into practice and installed the software client. I had seen a SETI client installation on a colleague's computer before.

I was always interested in space and fascinated by the possibility of the existence of extraterrestrial life forms.

I believe that there MUST be intelligent life somewhere in space. The probability (in relation to the size of the universe) is too high for space not to have born more than one intelligent kind of creature. Actually, there's a nice book about that, called "Probability One". Read it! ;-)

Maybe, our extraterrestrial neighbors aren't capable of sending signals that we might receive, but why not help to find out if "they" are trying to contact us. Potentially, the extraterrestrials don't have any interest in "being discovered" at all. They even might have been watching us for years or even millions of years, avoiding any contact with us. Another thought of mine is that the ETs might also exist in a matter that WE are unable to understand, that is way out of our imagination. Why should we e.g. eliminate the possibility of a "spritiual" creature or a creature consisting of foreign elements. I don't believe that oxygen is the only element life can be based on.

I hope that, one day, we'll establish contact to an extraterrestrial race. If they were friendly to us humans, we could only profit from this encounter. Maybe Earth could enjoy a new "unity" when it is faced to the fact that there's extraterrestrial neighbors out there.
