Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Extraterrestrial life must exist based on probability alone, considering the vastness of the universe. The real question is based not on existence, but on whether the distance between us and other life-forms can be bridged in some way.
Almost nothing can be found by way of even the most primitive life with the technology we have at present and for what could be centuries to come. From this, it's my opinion that we are more likely to be discovered by other life first rather than the other way around. It's a good thing we are so "noisy" with the myriad forms of technologic radiations our culture provides. Better than that, it makes good sense to "listen" along with our "talk" and hedge our bets.
SETI is an interesting and valuable exercise- both in human exploration and probably more importantly, distributed computing. It's the latter reason that motivates my participation in the project. As more applications for distributed computing are developed, the more we can harness the mega-tonnage of hardware produced in the last couple of decades for something valuable to us all. |
