Personal background
Living on the Sunshine Coast in Australia alows my family and I to see the night sky through a Telescope without much light polution.
I have always dreamed of meeting an E.T. though we have never seen any ufo's, my belief is strong enough to know we cannot be alone, one populated planet amongst billions of galaxy's, trillions of solar systems etc.
God help us if we are the apex of creation, we're not doing a very good job.
To expand, explore, grow as a people, gain understanding and knowledge, with tolerance and thoughtfullness, this is our goal, these should be some of the things we strive for.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life does exist, whether it is close enough for contact is another thing, could it have become extinct already in this phase of evolution, I don't know, but I believe we will find out, and probably within the next 10 - 15 years as our technology becomes more advanced, and our thirst for knowledge increases.
If there are any dangers posed by contact i would suggest the most likely cause of that being a closed mind and predjudice. Mankind is always afraid of something different, look at the way we still treat people of different ethnic backgrounds, 'as if they are inferior', may we be measured, thoughtfull and excited all at the same time, for we have a lot of learning to do, alot of wonderful spectacular knowledge to find out including the exploration of space and our own humanity.
Earth as a community should transmit a beacon to the out there saying we are here, and wish to communicate, wer're not perfect, but willing to learn and grow as a people.
I run SETI@home because I want to be part of something bigger than myself and keep my eyes, ears and mind open to all that is new even if I don't understand it.
