Personal background
I have been a classic SETI participant in the past, crunching ~5K work units, with the help of a Pentium 133Mhz (upgraded to 166MMX later), Duron 750MHz, Pentium 1.3Ghz at work, and various school machines ocasionally (Pentium133, P-II, P-III, 4CPU SGI MIPS, etc). I learned a great deal about hardware and software performance and tuning, as I moved from the original GUI to running with the graphics tuned off to running the various CLIs for each platform...

Now I've come back to aprticipate in donatign some more CPU cycles to science and to society where it cost me no more than a little time and some extra electricity.

BOINC! to you all ;-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Besides the very remote possibility of ETI discovery, SETI is helping in learning ways to culturally adhere people into a community with humanity, science and knowledge as goals and motivation, as opposed to interests, property and xenophobia.

Any additional science that can be drawn or derived from the collective data gathered with SETI@home can enhance its value and its attraction.
