Personal background
Hi there, I am from Evesham in the UK. I am 40 years old. I used to work for the European Space Agency in Germany and as a result of this I became interested in astronomy and the search for ET.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET exist?
Yes, I believe that there is life elsewhere in the universe, after all it is far too big a place that the miracle of life only happened once. As someone once said " If it's just us here, it's an awful waste of space!"
As to what will happen if we finally make 'first contact', I cannot say. Our thoughts in this direction have been influenced greatly by watching too many b rate movies!
I can only hope that the positive benefits are greater than the negative.
Whether or not we will be able to communicate with them is another matter! Lets just hope that the so called 'first contact' is after we become fluent in other languages.....after all we cannot communicate with animals let alone ET!!! Only then will we have a slim chance of exchanging concepts with an alien life form.
As to whether we should transmit a beacon, I havent really given it much thought...I think we should but are we actually ready for 'first contact'?? They would probably take one look at us and label us as primitive and not yet ready. After all we still haven't eradicated famine and war.........therefore are we ready to meet ET?? How can we offer our hand out in peace when we still dont have peace on Earth??
I run SETI@home because in essence humans are lazy and are quite happy to let ET find us. This project allows the average person a chance to do his/her bit, whether we are ready or not!!!!!!!
