Profile: Stephane Tremblay

Personal background
I'm living in Val-Belair (now part of the beautiful enlarged Quebec City), Province of Quebec, Canada.
The earth saw me for the first time in 1967 in Arvida (formerly part of Jonquiere, now part of Saguenay
city, which also include Chicoutimi). Indeed my primary language is French. Pardon me! I'm a mainframe computer
application developper in one of the larger insurance company in Canada, Industrial Alliance. I'm a serious coin
collector (I mean it can be very costly). Numismatics (coin collecting, studying and research) has always been my
first hobby. This time consuming passion began in 1980. I'm also interested in Astrophysics. Everything from the
Big Bang to the creation of life on earth (and I hope elsewhere!) is of interest to me, particularly in used books
I can find on the subject.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The understanding of how and why we are here is very important to me. I dream of the day
when the mystery of life and that of the universe will be solved. The SETI program will certainly help if one
good day an artificial signal from outer space is found. I'm sad to hear that even some of the most enthusiastic
scientists are becoming pessimist about the possibility to discover life outside our solar system. It tells me
that there's a possibilty we're alone and maybe that all search for life elsewhere is useless. It's something I
refuse to believe, the number of stars (consequently the number of planets), even when considering only those
in our galaxy, is too large. Why should we be alone? Hundreds of years ago the man thought we were the center of
the universe. We're not. He thought we were the center of our solar system. we're not. Our star is a standard one
in the arm (far from the center) of a standard galaxy. The only exceptional thing (I mean rare compared to the
number of stars) is life on earth. The universe still have its secrets and it's our obligation to discover them.
