Personal background
I pwn n00bs :)

Since my age is constantly changeing my date of birth is 11/01/79 so you can determine my current age from that :)

I'm a Java Developerin the financial sector for my sins. In my spare time I like to watch Celtic FC, play table-tennis, online gaming and to experiment with the latest web technologies. Besides working full-time i'm also a part-time student at the open university, currently studying planetary science having previously studied Computer Science then subsequently Philosophy.

I love learning and fully intend to stretch the limits of my grey matter, which by all accounts shouldn't be too dificult!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI@Home is a fantastic use of my redunadant MIPS. Grid computing is a tremendously powerful and exciting area for IT. I've been following grid cimputing from its early beginnings and considering the speed of progression in todays world am still astounded that its not on the common tongue.

The project is great from many different perspectives. Firstly the whole ET phone abroad thing is obviously what catches people's attentions, however, for me its the computer science aspect which most catches my eye. The sheer power of utilizing many PC's across the world for a common goal. The programming aspects also fascinate me.

I'd suggest creating more awareness of the "grid", its my opinion (and has been since the mid-ninties) that grid computing will power the future of science and business. More and more over the coming decades will businesses become aware of the power they have not in each computer but in the combined and collaborative efforts of all their computers. Its not just areas like SETI, Chemistry, Code breakers or the MET office who have need for this supreme processing power but when business realises they can project more accurately market trends, forecast financial scenarios and all the different possible financial outcomes to determine the best results for them that they will turn in their masses to grid technologies. Just look at the evolution of BOINC over the past decade!

That day may be a long way off but a long way off is a short time these days.
