Personal background
I'm 23 years old and I work as Finance & IT Officer for a charity in the UK. Whilst I'm not perhaps a typical sci-fi enthusiast, I love Star Trek and I'm fascinated by the concept of Space Travel and Exploration.

I'm a fairly open-minded person, but I'm sceptical about messing too much with nature (i.e. cloning etc), especially when it is unregulated!

I'm not a religious person, and I have a fairly negative view of the way a handful of people in the world use religion as a tool to manipulate others into following them.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists, in whatever form (I'm not a "little green man" subscriber!). I think that we will have made contact with another lifeform before 2050. Although reports have been written which siggest complete panic and social disorder at such a massive discovery, I think we will probably compose ourselves very quickly afterwards - in the UK we will probably just have another cup of tea, watch Coronation Street and then deal with it!!
I think we should transmit a beacon for others to find. After all, if scientists are correct in thinking that there could be as many as 50,000 species of "alien" in our galaxy, perhaps we may have been overlooked up to now. Maybe some alien culture has been travelling past our planet for centuries and never dropped in. If we initiate a first signal, maybe something may respond - or certainly take more notice of us...
If we were to transmit a signal, I think that we should send some "cultural" objects, such as artwork, music and literature. This would show us to be educated and peaceful.
There are three types of people in the world - complete believers, believers and non-believers. Complete believers have blind faith in the existence of extraterrestrials. Believers (of which I am one) acknowledge the possibility of life beyond our planet and would love to find proof of it. Non-believers refuse to accept the possibility of live beyond our atmosphere and continue to hold back the pace of scientfic discovery.
SETI@home provides a real opportunity for Joe Average to take part in what may be the project which proves the existence of extraterrestrial life. Now how can anyone fail to see the awesome excitement in that possibility!
I think the project is great - keep up all the hard work and let us know if you find anything!!
