Personal background
I'm a swiss theoretical astrophysicist. I'm working a lot with numerical simulations. Some computers of our linux cluster at the university are working for SETI when they have nothing else to do.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it is probable that somewhere in the universe there exists (or has existed and will exist) extraterrestrial life, seen the huge amount of galaxies, stars and the fact that extrasolar planets seem to be quite common. If we will ever be able to receive signals or even have contact with them is however another question. The problem are first the huge distances in the universe making it impossible to receive signal from distant "worlds", second the fact that forming intelligent life forms is probably much more difficult (and time consuming) than bacteria ,third that the lifetime of intelligent life forms that are able to send or receive radio signals is probably very short compared to the age of the universe and finally the time during which communication occurs via radio is probably even shorther. To receive signals from ETI the distance in space-time must be correct, i.e. a radio emitting culture must exist (or have existed) in a distace and moment in time that their radio waves are now reaching the Earth, and this is not so trivial. The best thing we can however do is SETI!
