Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Put simply because "it would be a waste of space if there isn't anything out there" ,Contact.

We have to look and listen because we can, its in our very nature to do so. It would be disappointing not to find something but tragic not to have tried and missed out on new knowledge etc.

Projects like this may ultimately prove to be futile but indirectly increase our knowledge and understanding and advance our civilisation, hopefully for the common good. Take for example the offshoot programs searching for cancer cures etc....
