Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extraterrestrial life exists. I have seen a few things that make me think that contact has already been made at some level. It may be that civilizations spend a relatively short time span using speed-of-light communication (i.e. radio) before advancing to quantum entanglement communication. So most advanced civilizations might not be putting off signals we can detect for much of the civilization's life-span.

The discovery of ETI will be beneficial for humanity because it first of all gives us hope. Hope that a civilization can survive its technology and not destroy itself either by war or destruction of the environment.

I do not think that sending a beacon will be of particular advantage because of the limits of speed and distance. Besides, I think a sufficiently advanced race would be able to find us without the beacon anyway.

I run SETI@home because I am the type that believes that if you are not a part of the solution, you are probably a part of the problem. Also, I like using my excess clock cycles for a good cause. I get more for my money that way!

I think the project is progressing nicely. Its a noble experiment and we are learning many things about it. I am especially excited about its demonstration of the power of distributed computing.
