| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I find it incomprehensible that we could be alone in the universe. As such, I feel that attempts should be made to discover any other lifeforms. However, I also believe that the possibility includes a high probability that any intelligence, should it exist, will be so vastly different that we will not be able to interface with the alien culture in any recognizable fashion. It will undoubtedly end up being a scientific exercise, not a political or media event (although the bloodthirsty hounds will do all they can to capitalize on it, to be sure!)
Since lightspeed communications take so long to travel such great distances, I doubt that we will intercept them and respond to them in my lifetime. It is more likely that some other form of communication (we are receiving a subspace communication, captain) which we presently do not have the technology to utilize, will be the answer to finding extraterrestrial life. We have a quantum leap to take before we can truly explore the possibilities in the galaxy. |
