Personal background
I'm an Australian, 56 years old. Long facinated by the vastness of the universe and all that is in it. Retired. Computers, writing, and world music, languages and cultures would be my main interests I guess - and being part of finding an ETI source in my lifetime....
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, of course ET Life exists. It would defy the simple laws of probability to suggest that life didn't exist out there as well as here on earth. Not to mention the laws of science.
Such life will be discovered - but perhaps not for another 50 years yet, unless one can suppose that others out there are also involved in SETI programs of their own, and began the search much earlier than us. Our signals have only been travelling some 50 or 60 years yet, so aren't even out of the neighbourhood. So how will we discover it? First by receiving signals that began their travels at some tiem way in our past. Supposing such a signal is found - the reply will not get back to them for at least another 100 years. And I doubt I'll be around then, pity!
The benefits will be the security blanket that is given to humans. We are not alone after all. Someone else has the same problems we do.
The only danges will be arise from within our own societies - those of us who can't deal with the idea, or have vested interestes in the status quo.
I run seti@home because I'd love to be even a tiny part of the exploration of the cosmos.
