Personal background |
I'm a software & systems engineer working for NG in Aurora, Colorado. I've worked for Northrop (formerly TRW) since 1989. Outdoors, I enjoy skiing, hiking, & mountain biking. Indoors, I enjoy salvaging old but usable PCs and donating them to worthwhile causes. I'm a enthusiastic Linux user/advocate, but I don't think Linux is for everyone (yet). I also really enjoy playing MMORPGs like GuildWars and World of Warcraft. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I run SETI@home because if intelligent extra-terrestrial life exists, electro- magnetic emissions of some sort will be the very first indication. I also like the Computer Science concept of massively distributed processing, which SETI@Home has taken to the next level in a very practical and cost-efficient way.
SETI@Home is doing the things that define the best features of humanity: Exploring, seeking knowledge, and looking for possibilities beyond what we know or are familiar with. It's an 'outward-looking' philosophy that shows optimism in the face of all the problems that exist here on Earth.
While I don't expect any contact to be made in my lifetime (the cosmic distances are too great, even at the speed of light) I still think it's worthwhile to lay the groundwork for future explorations.
