Personal background
UFO Siting? You decide.
I am a designer and sculptor. When I was about 8 or 9 years old, I saw a very strange site in the sky when my family and I were on a time drive in the desert in Oregon at about 9PM. The sky was clear and the traffic was very light. I was sitting in the front seat between my mother and father and had a very good veiw ahead. The car was going down a very straight and smooth road. An glowing object appeared on the horizon and travelled straight toward our car and directly over the road ahead never changing course. It grew larger and larger as it approached us. It's speed seemed to be about 2 to 3 times that of the opposing traffic; much too slow to be a meteor. The shape was spherical and it glowed red and orange and not overly bright for continued observation. As it flew over the car, we could hear a low frequency rumbling much like far off thunder or a frieght train. As it passed over the car, I could judge it's size to be about 50 Meters or so in diameter. I watched through the back window as it continued over the road and seemed to rise up as it dissappeared in the night sky. My parents seemed to be just as confounded as I was after seeing it. For years afterward, they would not speak of it and claimed no memory of it when asked about it by me. About two years ago, I asked my mom again about that night and she finally let on that that it really did occur. Her memory of it was the same as mine. My dad, brother and sister still say it never happened. Did we slow down or stop the car? Nope, we just kept going.
I know there is something out there. It has always been a hope of mine to find out more about our neighbors and verify my siting to be intelligent origins.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am positive that ET life exists. It would be highly unlikely that out of trillions of planets, ours was the only one to support intelligent life. The benifits of making contact would be extrodinary, especially if they were already at a stage of sustained space travel. I hardly expect that they would look similar to us in anyway other than having highly dextrous appendiges and large brain sizes. They certainly wouldn't speak English as it is a highly illogical and crude language. If we were to transmit some sort of language on purpose for our neighbors, it would be better to use Indonesian language as it is much more logical and has no phonic our grammatical exceptions; it even lacks plural and singular vocabulary differences because it just repeats words to indicate plural (orang = person, orang orang = people). Trigonometric mathamatical ideas would be a good way to begin communicating. Music would also be in interesting way to communicate, assuming their ears would respond to the same frequency range as ours. Elephants can communicate on sub audible frequencies. Maybe they don't have ears, so assuming they would take a radio broadcast and play it through speakers is perhaps too much to hope for. Transmitting moving pictures would assume that they have similar methods of decoding such information. I would think any attempt at communicating should be kept as simple as possible at first until contact is made. Perhaps super bright pulsed lazer beams directed at far off star clusters would be a good idea. Encode complex messages into very simple burst patterns.
I am very excited to be part of this program. Good luck.
