Personal background
Hi. I'm from Chicago, a middle-aged stay-at-home computer addict, who never even owned one until about 10 years ago. I've always loved Science Fiction in any form, even though the new novels seem to have badly deteriorated when compared to the originality of past, great authors. Even though it's highly unlikely, I can still hope that SETI will discover signs of another culture while I'm around to see it.

11/22/2014: I'm not middle-aged anymore; now I'm a 72 year old computer addict and have little hope that extraterrestrial life will be found before I check out. Maybe you'll be luckier.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do I think ET life exists? Definitely, although I also believe that a more advanced life form wouldn't want to have anything to do with us until we learn to get along with each other and respect the planet we are now despoiling.

2. I don't think an advanced civilization needs a beacon to find us, and we've already sent out much more information about us than anyone would want to know, in the form of radio and tv broadcasts.

3. I run SETI@home to do the little I can to further our knowledge of the universe (and doesn't THAT sound pompous!). Actually, I think the SETI personnel are doing a great job, especially considering the fact that there's no end in sight.
