| Personal background |
I was Born in the wet climate of Manchester (England) in 1973. Where I lived and played until finally moving away to enjoy the peace and calm of the Northants countryside. At the moment I am currently sharing my peaceful home with three cats, several fish, and an uncontrollable, but friendly Aussie.
I was educated at the University of Hertfordshire in the stimulating field of Mechanical Engineering. But since then have spent most of my working career designing and writing PLC driven industrial control systems.
I spend most of my spare time assisting in the running of our local youth club where I have the undesired job of being club treasurer. Other than that I enjoy playing pool and watching my revered football team (soccer to you yanks) Man Utd kick arse.
My only other passion, which hasn’t been easy due to work, is to travel. So far my limited chances have restricted me to most of Western Europe, Israel, the great pyramids of Egypt, and the exotic charms of Thailand and Cambodia. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Well does life exist out their, being of a scientific background it’s hard to imagine that life in some form of another doesn’t exist. In fact there’s probably a good chance that life here on earth was first kick started by alien microbes hitching a ride on some doomed comet in the first place. We will discover it; well I think it’s only a matter of time. We may even find life in our own solar over the next couple of decades; Mars still hangs on to the chance of life and Saturn’s moon Europa must be a good bet. But to find intelligent life is another matter, who knows how long it’s going to take, but I am sure its only a matter of time.
The biggest question, I think, is how we will react to the knowledge that intelligent life exists. Will it bring us together or cause greater divisions between our nations. It’s not hard to imagine the world’s governments being divided over how to treat ET or who should and shouldn’t be allow to communicate with them, its sad but it’s possible. I think the biggest danger is how religion will react, I have no doubt that some will fear such a discovery. To have your belief and faith questioned in such ways could cause bigger divisions between countries than any government could cause.
Why run Seti, I been asked this question by a lot people (mostly people how think it’s a joke). My usually response is why not, it’s a great way to use your computer, to be part of some global challenge to find ET over the Internet. What better way is there to bring people together from all over this little earth, to prepare them for the possibility that we are know longer alone. Plus it’s also a great way of comparing your computers performance against your friends and others around the world.
