Profile: Jim Strait

Personal background
I am the founder of the USS Matrix's SETI@Home Team for an internet based Star Trek club. The USS Matrix is the first all internet based chapter of Star Fleet International, the oldest and largest Star Trek fan organization in the world. Our club is organized into departments of interest. I am in the Science Division as the Chief Stellar Cartographer. I am pleased to join like-minded SETI@Home researchers engaged in our common quest.

As per me personally, I am in Phoenix AZ USA; age 56; computer tech support
person; interested in SciFi, fandom, computers, astronomy, and the Universe.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.How and when did you become interested in SETI@home?

As soon as I heard about. It is a brilliant idea that may some day change the world as we know it.

2. Why do you run SETI@home?

Because I recognize myself as an element in an important mechanism.

3. What are your views about the SETI@home project?

The concept to resolve a nearly insurmountable task with what amounts to
"Free Money" is elegant in its design.

4. Why do you think it's worthwhile?

Understanding our place in the Universe as thinking/self aware beings, requires us to find at least one other such independent being. Once we know the likelihood of occurrence we can start to understand our potential, and then our directions.

5. What are your thoughts about extraterrestrial intelligence?
Are they out there?

The Universe is infinite because a limit can not be defined. In an infinte Universe in which something can happen, it does.... infinitely. Only the odds of occurences are in question. We exist, therefore others do too. "How often" is all that is in question.

Will we discover them?

I do not know. I don't have a basis to even guess. We must first look.

What are the benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

Benefits: In the abstract: Direction, realization of possible differences, but mostly inspiration. In the pratical: When enough people are motivated to resolve a large task, innovative results are brought forward. Pass or fail, the same technology SETI@Home pioneered are now aiding medical, physics, and environmental research in ways we previously would not have thought of nor easily initiated. This trend will continue.

Dangers: The dangers are only realized by Science Fiction.
