Personal background
I am a computer geek that came from a finance background. I'm 36 years old and spend most of my time in front of computers (working, programming, building a home network or just reading the news). I have non-PC hobbies like fishing, boating, camping, hiking and scuba. I'm boring, but I manage to keep myself entertained.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I think extraterrestrial life exists. It's bound to with the trillions of stars in the millions of galaxies in the universe. We would be naive to believe Earth is the only plce in the universe with life. Whether God created the universe or it was just a result of the big bang, it is too vast to believe that this is all life here on Earth. Personally, I believe that God created the big bang...and as a result Earth.

I think the most plausible method of discovery of extraterrestrial life is via radio waves. A civilization that was nearby but not much more advanced than us would certainly produce signals that could be detected. A far away advanced civiliztion would emit signals that we could see long before they would be able to cover the great distances that would be required. A nearby advanced civilization would probably be more likely to be detected by radio signals as well...since they probably would not want to have their presence generally known.

The benefits of such a discovery are primarily new technology and philosphies. The dangers are contamination, fear among the populace or that the aliens might be hostile and attack us. I think the possible benefits outweigh the risks...but then I am an explorer at heart.

2. Yes, humans should transmit a beacon for others to find, with basic information about our civilization. We should, however, consider the risks.

3. I run Seti@home because I want to be a part of the search. How many CPU cycles would go to waste every day if I did not? I want to contribute resources that would otherwise go unused. I want to make a difference. I want to be a part of this.

Seti@home is an excellent project. The only suggestion I have is that the software allow more control over settings. For example, I have several multi-user WinXP Pro machines joined to a domain. Different logins often choose differnt locations for the .sah files (on their own, not due to the user). This drives me nuts...I may have a work unit that is 80% complete for one login th
