Profile: Carl Gren

Personal background
Hello,

My name is Carl and I am a 25 year old husband and the father of a beautiful little girl. Currently, I am working to complete an Associates of Information Technology and a Bachelors of Interdisciplinary Arts. I also serve in the U.S. Army National Guard as a combat medical technician. Unfortunately, after the September terrorist events, I was laid off from my job as Network Technical Specialist at a leading Telecommunications company. Eventually I hope to teach at the college level and continue toward a career in researching those things extra-terrestrial. I have always had a gift with computer and information technology and a yearning to learn everything about the science of our universe. I am my own worst enemy as I have a rational, logical approach to life yet the imagination of Fox Mulder. Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated with just about everything one could think of; Curious about the inter-workings of all things tangible or not. And I have always been a risk taker. One example, I have recently undertaken an attempt at starting my own business until I can secure a new job. Stop by my site Community Information Systems and let me know what you think. A prolific man once uttered "An unexamined life is the life of ignorance...", let this remind us of our commitment to SETI, The Planetary Society and all other private sectors striving to go "Boldly go where no one has gone before."

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.1. I believe as human beings at this point in our exploration and current level of understanding of our universe would be both presumptuous and naive to think that we are the only life in this vast universe. Humans may discover extraterrestrial life elsewhere as we do most things; by accident or coincidence. If we are to find life we need to begin changing our preconceived notions on the nature of life and the universe as a whole. As with any "first contact" with an "alien" species or culture, the dangers and benefits of discovering any extraterrestrial life would be enormous, both to humanity and to whatever type of life we may discover.
2. I believe we have already transmitted a "Beacon" in the form of the Voyager Probe. If you mean a terrestrial based beacon, I don't believe at this time we have any scientific basis for doing such a thing. Although we listen and use extraterrestrial radio signals to study the universe, if any intelligent life does exist, human beings currently have no way of knowing which of the uncountable bands and frequencies of radio wave to use, or where to broadcast it for that matter.
3. I run Seti@ home because I believe that through true cooperative networking we can all do a small part to complete the bigger picture as a whole. I believe in the efforts put forth by Seti researchers and scientists. I want to contribute in any way that I can to the continued success of the Seti@home project and the Seti organization.
