Personal background
I am a semi retired woman who now runs an herb nursery from our farm. I am working harder now than when I worked at the local library. I enjoy gardening, of course, and cooking with the herbs I sell. I especially like meeting my customers at the markets and events I participate in, and educating folks in the wonderful uses of herbs in food, the garden and the home.

Our farm is in rural South Central Texas with gently rolling hills, lots of grassland for cattle and beautiful spring wildflowers.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think SETI@home is an excellent use of the millions of hours of idle personal computer time available. I firmly believe in the existence of extraterrestial life, and I believe that some of that life must have evolved to the level of intelligence of human life, and beyond our level. I have my doubts as to whether SETI will discover evidence of such life, however.

For SETI to make such a discovery, radio telescopes will have to be pointed in just the right direction at just the right time. An intelligent civilization will have to use technology that produces an electromagnetic signal, and will have to, I believe, be actively signaling the universe. And we will have to be the correct distance from that planet such that we are listening when the signal arrives. The signal , in order for us to have a good chance of receiving it will, in my opinion, have to be produced for millenia. Furthermore, the signal will have to have been conceived of using logic similar to the logic we use to deduce what such a signal might look like. This is an incredible set of circumstances that must come together in order for SETI to discover such a civilization.

Nevertheless, I believe it is worth our while to make the attempt to locate such a signal, and I am proud to be able to participate. Even if such a signal is never located, the possibility of extraterrestial life, and even intelligent extraterrestial life exists. Imagine a non-technological, but highly intelligent species. Some people believe that whales and dolphins may be examples of such life.
