Personal background
Ever since my first computer - a Timex Sinclair 1000 - I've been hooked. It could be argued that I was born with the Computer Nerd gene, but.. well, okay, I was. Mom and Dad were entrenched in the stuff well before the first Bell break-up (if you're not sure what that is, ask someone over 30.. or their parents), so I suffered no lack of resources and sagacious advice. Computers and I get along very well because we're both interrupt-driven and we both respond erratically to incomplete instructions.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I learned about SETI@home while working with Dr. John Bernard on a class project at Tri-County Technical College, but never used it until I saw my Dad's enthusiasm for the project. I think that SETI's efforts unequivocally demonstrate a faith, curiosity, and objectivity that, to be honest, I didn't think anyone had any more; And he reminded me that I have something to contribute - even if only a few spare clock ticks.
When we speak of benefits and dangers we seem to forget that those terms are used to describe situations encountered in the pursuit of an objective. If our objective is "to explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe," then the discovery of extraterrestrial life will be the single greatest benefit we've had. Two common dangers in the pursuit of any objective are ignorance and impotence - lacking either information or the power to use it; Let's hope that we can minimize those dangers in our Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
