Personal background
I am from Virginia, USA., a former Air Force pilot, flew CAP sorties but mostly search and rescue missions in Vietnam. I enjoy recreational flying and learning more about computers and the broad impact technology will have on our future.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It would be arrogant of the human race to think we are the only life in the universe, a place so vast it denies comprehension. We WILL discover life or be discovered, because we seek to learn about our place in the grand scheme of things. Humans do not like boundries or the unkown, we push to expand boundries and learn the secrets of what we cannot explain.
There is risk in seeking out intelligent life alien to our world, what if we get the attention of a people so advanced we would be a mere pest to them such as a fly that we would swat. That however is unlikely and a risk that must be taken. The benifits and knowledge to be gained are unlimited and exploration is the "human" thing to do.
We have been transmitting a beacon since the invention of radio and those early signals are still traveling through space thus far ahead of any intentional beacon we could transmit now. A beacon transmission would be futile but if sent, it should be comprised of mathmatical computations or demonstrations of prime numbers, any space traveling race would reconize this as an intelligent message.
I run SETI because I believe life exists other than on Earth and our government cannot finance the search so the private sector must take on the burden.
Just look how the citizens of the United States has forgotten our differences and become ONE again after the attack of 9.11. When we have a common goal or focus we humans truley are at our best. The same uniting or pulling together as one, will happen to ALL citizens of planet Earth when we discover life outside of our little world. The discovery of alien life will shatter the bickering between religous groups, political factions and governments because we will be forced to become what in truth we already are.." The United People of Planet Earth".
