Personal background
My name is Paul Lee, and I currently live in Woking, in Surrey in the UK (thats to the south west of London). I was born in Nigeria on Hallowe'en Night - perhaps for this reason, I have a life long interest in ghosts and the paranormal. I have a 1st class BSc in Physics and PhD in Nuclear Physics,
and I currently work in the defence industry writing simulation software. Sounds glamourous - its not though!!!!! I appear to be having a midlife crisis at the age of 31, and I'm not sure what I want to do anymore. For more info, have a look at my website at http://www.paullee.com
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am absolutely certain that ET life exists, but I am not 100% sure that we have been visited by aliens. Lets face it - they've been receiving our radio signals for the best part of a century. Would YOU visit us??!!
I do feel that enormous benefits could be obtained from an ET civilization, but I am concerned about giving us technologies that we are not yet ready for. Think about giving cave men rifles etc. As one sci-fi TV programme said "wisdom must be earned - it cannot be given".
By all means, let us transmit more Arecibo-type messages into space. Why should we expect the aliens to transmit when we're not sending coherent messages into space for civilizations? Its a case of "do as we say, not as we do".
