Profile: Simon Tammadge

Personal background
I am a 40 something IT professional living in West Sussex, England.
I joined the SETI@home project back in June 1999 after reading about it in the IT press, but my creaky old Pentium 166 never managed to complete the first unit partly due to its spec but mostly because of my habit of rebuilding my machine at regular intervals. I've upgraded my PC several times since then but never got around to reinstalling the SETI app.

This year (2001) I built myself a 1Gig PIII and in an idle moment downloaded and reinstalled SETI@home. I'm now processing a far more satisfying one unit per day. I suppose that since we are a multiple PC household I should get 3 or 4 machines running and get my unit count up.

I’ve always had a deep interest in astronomy and astrophysics spending hours on-line looking at results from Hubble, VLT etc. The problem with armchair astronomy is that its so comfortable that you don't get in the garden with your telescope as regularly as you should.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
"Space is BIG, really big..." - Douglas Adams

In a universe this big we can't be alone.

I want to know if there is 'life' out there (scientific curiosity).

I don't think that we should advertise our presence (self preservation).

If we do find anything I am convinced that the immense distances and times involved will frustrate/protect us from whatever it is.

I’m sure that mankind will snuff itself out before we have to worry about Little Green Men.

Ultimately we may well be alone in a universe full of ‘life’.
