Personal background
Hi. I'm Martin, a clergyman from Greater Manchester, UK. My background is as a classically trained musician, but I've always had a keen interest in Science - pursued just as a hobby since A-Level Physics (more years ago than I care to remember!) Might seem strange, someone in the Church taking an interest in ET? I believe that it's through Science that we learn to appreciate the real wonder and truth of Creation, and truth in all its forms is something worth seeking. I might give my concept of the "Absolute Truth" the title of "God", whilst others may prefer a different title - but ultimately, what we're looking for is probably not that different. Let's use Science for all the good it can achieve, and to get closer to understanding how wonderful is the scheme of things in which we are all so tiny yet complex a part.

It seems to me inconceivable that in all this vast Universe we should be the only occurrence of (allegedly!) intelligent life. I hope one day we may make contact with others seeking to expand their own knowledge, and then we can learn from each other. Until then? Well, there's always Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home, and other BOINC projects, to make fuller use of my computers. (And then I play around upgrading the computers to make better use of BOINC - but that's another story!) I like being a part of the search for ET. To be honest, I doubt if our study of radio signals at this moment in History will reveal a civilization out there that happened to be transmitting the right sort of signal, just the right length of time ago - but I'd love to be proved wrong, and we'll never know if we don't look. I hope the project will expand in time, perhaps looking for new forms of communication we don't even know about yet, or maybe even finding a doorway to Star Trek's elusive "Sub-Space"?

And then, if "they" are looking for us too, who knows what might turn up, or when?
