Profile: Jeanette Elliott

Personal background
I am a 47-year-old mother of two children; a son who has given me a beautiful granddaughter, and a daughter who has given me a wonderful grandson. I am attending college (on-line) full time while helping my mother care for my father, who has cancer. I will earn my Associates in Accounting in the fall of 2005 and will continue to work towards my Bachelor degree. I was born and raised in Florida, but moved to North Carolina several years ago. My hobbies are knitting and crocheting. I like just about any kind of puzzle: crossword, math and jigsaw (the harder, the better), and I like playing video games, board games and card games. I enjoy some movies and I love to read. My movie/reading favorites consist of mysteries, science fiction (who would have guessed), historical, mythological, magical. If it’s controversial, I’ll probably like it. My favorite television shows are all the Star Trek series including Deep Space Nine and Enterprise (surprised?).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe in the possibility that life exists outside our universe and hope someday we find them, but don't think it will be in my lifetime. I think that scientists who look only for life that is equivalent to our own are short-sited. There is no reason to believe "life" elsewhere will look like us, develop like us, breath like us, or even live under the same conditions as we do. Because we can't survive in methane gas doesn't mean a being can't have developed and live in it under conditions we know nothing about. Discovering life outside our planet is risky, yet necessary. We may meet beings who can teach us how to survive situations that are yet to come. Of course, we don't know if such beings would be hostile or docile towards us, any kind of exploration requires taking chances. Transmitting a beacon with information about Earth and its inhabitants, as well as our intentions in our search for new life, is a great idea. I run SETI@home because if someone out there contacts us in some way, I want to be part of it.
