Watch the movie Contact. I'm that guy in the beach-hat at the initial testing of the Alien Technology.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Does E.T. exist? Absolutely. When we get past the 'How do you eat' and 'Why do we eat' stages and move into the 'Where shall we have lunch' stage of evolution, we'll finally be interesting enough to be visited. Possible pro/con of finding E.T. would be a complete loss of interest in life on earth.

2. We already -unwittingly- transmit a beacon. If anything, we should send a 'Do Not Disturb' sign or an 'Already Distrubed' Sign.

3. I run Seti at home because I really like that my old Pentium 200MHz took ~30hours per WU, and now my Pentium 4 1.6GHz Pc only requires ~110mins per WU. My views on the project are too great to mention hear however SETI's view -of the sky- should be greater still. S.E.T.I. should revamp its mission statement to simply say: 'Search for Evidence that we're Alone' -S.E.A.
