Personal background
Now living in Connecticut, I grew up and spent most of my life in Rhode Island. As this is truly a state in which there are only 6 degrees of separation between any two residents, I was eager to escape. And, in the same vein, I hope that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe so that, as a species, we will expand beyond our own "6 degrees". I currently work as a Pension Consultant, setting up and administering retirement plans for small companies, so I spend a lot of time in front of a computer. I figure that while I am trying to help people in the short-term with my work, I might as well have my computer try to help humanity in the long-term with the search. I have two gorgeous children (my son was born in 2001, my daughter in 2003). And before any thoughts of what life may be like "out there", I have been struck with a sense of awe of what life is like and watching it blossom "down here"...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think that intelligent life exists, has existed, or will exist elsewhere in this vast universe of ours, though I feel that in our my lifetime this will never be proven. Technology must advance far beyond what we have now to make any contact possible, never mind a viable expenditure of our resourses. Someone once told me, "Aliens will only contact us once they can make money by doing so." But, in reality, I think that it is almost the opposite. WE will put more effort into reaching out THERE only when there is money to be made form the venture. That, unfortunately, is the mind set of our race...
