Personal background
October 2002
I live in Nederland, Colorado with my family. I'm married to a wonderful woman since 1986, we have two kids, two dogs, one bird, one turtle, and a house.

I'm a programmer, last working for Veritas a little over a year ago. Unfortunately, I've been out of work since then. The economy in this state has been tech driven, and has been significantly affected by the bursting of the tech bubble, the decline of the telecom companies in the wake of Enron and Worldcom, and the overall downturn of the national economy. I believe that there will be a recovery, and have been optimistic that the recovery is just a month or so away, but it hasn't worked out that way so far.

I'm a member of the Nederland Volunteer Fire Department. Most of our calls are medical, but some of them are search and rescue. I completed Fire Fighter academy this past spring, have been training every weekend with a 50 pound pack on a 6-10 mile hike, and have since lost about 10 pounds. (not bad for a dad!)

My wife and I assist in my mothers care. She's 81 years old and lives with us. Since moving in with us about 2 years ago, there's been a lot of action. Her general health and memory is declining, but I think/hope we still have a few more years.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes, I have a strong blind belief that there is life somewhere else in the Universe. But I know some people that would debate whether there is intelligent life here, on this big blue marble. Using my current limited knowledge of physics, the discovery will not be within my lifetime, unless there is a different method of communication that is either faster than lightspeed, or is not subject to physical constrants such as distance.

2) Yes. I believe that strangers tend to be friends that you haven't met yet. What to send, we're already doing it, warts and all, in the form of radio and television broadcasts. If we are to be judged, I'd rather that we are judged for what we truly are, and not by the timeliness of a politically or socially correct answer to a discrete question.

3) I have a fast dual processor computer now. I'd like to share it's spare cycles with others, but I also like the bragging rights to being able to process 12 work units per day (although my average shows something less).
