Personal background
I've long been interested in the SETI research and have been an active participant in SETI@Home since May 17, 1999, very close to the beginning of the project.

I've read with interest the comments from people who enrolled in this program hoping to prove that there is no God and that religion is hokum. I'm not sure where they are coming from with this.

The universe is a big place. As we are finding out (these are exciting times!) there are many other stars out there that are home to other planets. The planets we've found so far are massive Jupiter class planets, but there is no reason to expect that, as our search technology improves, we won't be able to locate Earch class planets soon. If there are planets similar to earth then it is reasonable to expect that some of these might harbor life, perhaps even advanced civilizations.

I see no contradiction here with the tenents of Christianity or most other religions.

We must assume that there is some creative force behind the universe. There was a point of creation and there is an edge to the universe, outside of which is infinity. If the universe had an impersonal (natural) beginning then why not assume that we are not unique but just one of many life forms. But why would a personal creator not create other life than us? God has created worlds we have yet to see, galaxies we will never see. Why not other life?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Looking at the stars as an amateur astronomer, I can't help but hope that there is someone out there looking back at me. I wonder what constellation our sun is a part of. Is it a hunter in the sky or some sort of exotic extra-terrestrial creature? How bright is our sun from their home world? Does it shine like a beacon or does it fade into the cloud of the Milky Way? Do they detect a wobble in our sun and wonder if there is life there?
