Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that there is a possibility in this vast universe that extraterrestrial life exists. In what form? - I'm not sure of. I don't believe that we have seen any contact by extraterrestrials (crop circles come to mind here). If we do discover contact by extraterrestrial life, it will be either from a super-advanced civilization, or a no-longer existent one. The fact is, the signal will probably originate from millions of light years away. All we will be able to do is listen in. This would give us a great deal of information and would certainly be fascinating. But, it won't allow us to establish two-way communication (unless they tell us how to send signals faster than the speed of light).

We should be transmitting a beacon for others to find. Why? - Why not?

I run SETI because it's fun. I'm glad to contribute my unused cpu power to a good cause. I think it's amazing how much cpu power we can all create together. Also, some of my EE classes I took delt with converting signals using FFT algorithms and extrapolating signal information. It's neat to see the program crunching the data in this way. I've read how they go about searching for particular signals - and since I understand this stuff, I can really appreciate the spectral graphs and such.
