Profile: Jimmy Neon

Personal background
I am a neon glass artist and amateur scientist.

My calling, besides art, is to better understand your average mind - as we all have to live with them.

Average minds in America are extremely superstitious i.e. religion, numerology, chiropractic and many other feel good beliefs. I also campaign for an ending to the so-called 'War on Drugs', a truly conservative stance - and for a modified kind of Libertarianism.

I attended the University of Iowa from 1968 until 1974 and my father was a genuine scientist teaching at Northwestern University for 45 years. He was also a scientific glassblower.

Living near the water in the Pacific N.W. I have a boat and an older RV and a dog named Lucy and live in a 65 yr. old log cabin. I think I have it all.

My latest accomplishment is being on public TV, over and over again, for the last four months (talking about my art) and being in Playboy the December before last (www.jimmyneon.com).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I grew up living next door to Dr. J.Allen Hynek and my life long friend has been his son, Joel (who won the Academy Award for special effects for What Dreams May Come). Dr. Hynek coined the terms Close Encounters of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Kinds and wrote books about U.F.O's. He taught with my father at Northwestern.

Dr. Hynek told me he believed that so-called UFO's may well come from a parallel dimension. He was a real scientist with seemingly non-scientific beliefs - - non-scientific to the uninformed, that is. I remember speaking to Joel on the phone when we were kids only to be interrupted by an operator for Project Blue Book - with an important sighting. I have wonderful stories about life around the Hynek household.

I believe the speed of light is too slow to permit good communication and that advanced civilizations don't exist long enough for predictable communications.
