Personal background
I'm a 27 year old Medical Doctor from Santiago, Chile. I'm currently pursuing a career in Medical Research, doing my PhD in medical sciences. I've always been fascinated by astronomy (once I planned to become an astronomer). I enjoy playing guitar, music and finding useful ways to use computers to help us understand life and diseases. I first heard about the SETI program a few years ago. I found it extremely interesting because I heard the story of the Arecibo radiotelescope, and how there was no possibility for it to be functioning further, so the idea of using "resting" computer power to support SETI was really brilliant. Those days I had only one slow computer. Now I help configuring some computers in my lab and work so they can run SETI as a screensaver. I’m currently running SETI@home in 7 computers, ranging from a 3.2 GHz P4 to a 400 MHz P2. This setup has been recently established, in an attempt to increase workunit processing power.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI@home should appear to some persons as a "naive" project, specially in a world like ours, where any hope or quest which is carried without a directly profitable purpose is rapidly defied. I have always had hope in causes which may be catalogued as "altruistic", but history teaches us that only people with imagination, ingenuity and passion for this type of tasks has the power to change the world in benefit of their own kind. This is where I think that true scientific work, art and religion converge to goodness of spirit. SETI is a project of this type, which may appear "silly" to some persons, but has the power to change man´s history forever, and to respond to our ancient need of not being alone in the vastness of space and time. Good work, people at Berkeley. This project surely reminds us the figure of Dr. Carl Sagan, who drove many young people towards the rewarding and beautiful path of science and knowlege, so be it...
